The local support team back in Australia have managed to secure flights out of Fiji, two days ahead of schedule, but that still leaves three whole days to fill in. During the night the light rain returned to its torrential state, turning the receding waters.
Roads to the airports are blocked, bridges are washing away, and Fiji is almost a state of emergency. The government has negotiated to cancel flights into Fiji. As I am writing in the journal for today I note that this is April Fool's Day, and I can hear the promising sound of jets on the runway at the nearby airport. We are fortunate enough to be on the right side of the bridge that has washed away, other tourists are paying $500 each to be helicoptered over the river.
The storm has bought down a tree near the house, and it is posed on the power line, although there is room for the vehicle to drive underneath. All four of us are relieved to be able to come back to the house during the day, and to escape the constraints of the single hotel room. Although there is no power to the residence, there is the blessing of gas, and a mountain of food to be eaten from the fridge.
