I often spend time with my 17 year old niece, and through the years being an extra guiding hand in the growing child's life has been a challenge. It is really great to see her blossom into an adult. Finally the parental figures in her life are no longer complete idiots, and she is understanding reason, logic and some life lessons.
We had a chat recently, and I got to play an independent mentor role, with the advice provided being a match for any other teenager looking for a navigating life hand. After our discussion I had to head off for some of my own parental duties. But it was awesome to see the note left for me on the bench later that evening....
